China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index rose to 50.1 in September from 49.8 in August, the Associated Press reported, citing the National Bureau of Statistics. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the survey’s measure of activity.
The return above that threshold is a positive signal, but it is a modest one. The reading was in line with economists’ expectations and follows two months below 50, so it does not by itself establish a durable industrial recovery.
Global suppliers and commodity businesses will look for confirmation in subsequent data, orders and export performance. The broader context remains China’s effort to support growth while manufacturers navigate domestic and international demand.
